As quickly as it began, another cohort of Skills for Hire Atlantic participants have officially wrapped up their 20 weeks of learning. The program runs two concurrent streams – one in data analytics and the other in website development – each chosen with industry research to fill the entry-level talent labor gaps in Atlantic Canada’s tech sphere.
After having seen an overwhelming response to the fall 2022 intake, people from across Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick began their learning in early August. After diligently working their way through the contents of the program many participants achieved their unique goals; some even securing new employment already! Positions ranged from data engineer, to ITS service desk attendant, to bilingual industry engagement advisor – a huge congratulations to those who started new careers!
While acquiring new employment is certainly something to celebrate, many other participants achieved different personal goals through their participation in the program.
“Skills For Hire Atlantic has provided me with a great starting point for beginning a career in our tech industry. I knew I wanted to work in this industry before, but I had no idea how or where to begin. Now I feel more prepared to look for my first job and put my new skills to use!”
The program gives opportunities for people at many different stages in their career journey. It also offers the flexibility that a traditional school system may not; ultimately allowing more people to learn at their own pace, in their own time.
“This was a great opportunity for me to learn new skills. I was not able to join all the demo sessions because I had my baby in October. However, I could finish all the training courses. The courses were very easy to understand and informative. I was very happy to join this program. “
As the next cohort of Skills for Hire Atlantic is set to begin, it is safe to say that the appetite for tech learning has maintained its popularity. Applications for the Winter cohort closed on January 13th, and after receiving a staggering 1600 plus applications from across Atlantic Canada we are excited to welcome a new group of learners to begin the program at the end of the month.
“There are tons of web development courses out there, but it’s confusing to know where to start and what’s useful in the real world. With the Skills for Hire Atlantic program, I embarked on a curated, self-directed learning journey, with resources and mentoring along the way. Now that I’ve completed the program, I’m building my portfolio and seeking employment.”
